City and Suburbans stalwart Johnny van Niekerk has sadly passed away this week.

Van Niekerk was a front row forward who represented City and Suburbans in the 1960s and 1070s.

Sadly, he passed away due to COVID-19 just a week after his son, Paul.

Western Province Rugby Football Union President Zelt Marais said that his thoughts are with the Van Niekerk family at this difficult time.

“Sincerest condolences to the family of legend Johnny Van Niekerk who passed away just days after his son Paul due to covid. May the almighty guide and comfort his wife and family during this sad time of bereavement and may his dear soul rest in peace.

“Johnny was a very pleasant, affable person. Our heartfelt condolences to the Van Niekerk family at the terrible loss of a father and son in such a short space of time,” he said.
