The DHL Western Province Under-19s suffered a disappointing 19-25 defeat to the Sharks Under-19 team in their hard-fought provincial encounter at Villager RFC on Saturday.

Both teams scored three tries a physical encounter, which saw the visitors lead by 3-0 at half-time after the match venue was changed from DHL Newlands to Brookeside due to heavy rain in the area.

The Sharks youngsters pounced on some crucial WP errors from kicks ahead to score two early second-half tries to put them ahead by 15-5, before the teams swapped tries to leave the Sharks ahead by 22-12 going into the final ten minutes.

A snap-drop from Sharks No.12 Sandile Kubeka extended their lead to 25-12 and WP then hit back with another try, from yet another powerful forwards effort, to trail by 25-19 going into the final four minutes. Province pressed hard for a potential winning score but they were denied by some resolute defence in the end.

The WP Under-19 team’s tries were all scored by replacement forwards, hooker/flank Ramone Samuels, lock Sebastian Negri and flanker Josh Moon. Flyhalf Chris Smith kicked two conversions.
