‘Thank you to our supporters’

PUBLISHED: October 29, 2014

Tuesday’s DHL Western Province victory parade was the perfect opportunity for the team, management and leadership to say thank you to the people of Cape Town for their hand in DHL WP’s Absa Currie Cup triumph.

DHL Western Province clinched a second Currie Cup win in three seasons and once again took to the streets of the Mother City to pay tribute to the amazing supporters, who stood behind their team through thick and thin.

Three buses, made up of the majority of the players who featured in the 2014 Absa Currie Cup season, team management and VIPs began the parade with the Executive Mayor Patricia de Lille at Cape Town City Hall at about 12h30, with activations having begun in the streets outside City Hall from as early as 11h00.

Thereafter, the buses made their way through Adderley Street, Wale Street, Long Street, Buitengracht Street, Loop Street and Strand Street. The buses then moved on to Gugulethu Square (in Gugulethu) – via Klipfontein Road in Athlone – and then finished off at the Liberty Promenade in Mitchell’s Plain to complete the parade.

People came out in their droves to meet their heroes – some holding newspaper billboards, others with WP Rugby flags, others with a jersey; hoping to get an autograph or just to catch a glimpse of their favourite players.

Crowd favourite Nizaam Carr addressed the audiences at City Hall and Mitchell’s Plain, whilst scrumhalf Nic Groom led a memorable sing-along in Gugulethu which had those supporters present in a frenzy.

Western Province Rugby Football Union President Thelo Wakefield told www.wprugby.com: “It was a small way for us to say thank you to our amazing supporters – The Faithful who support us at DHL Newlands and those who are there in spirit.

“I’d also like to thank everyone for taking time out of their busy schedules to greet the team and show their support. We’re blessed to have the best supporters in the world – yesterday was proof thereof!”
