Double Absa Currie Cup-winning DHL Western Province flyhalf, Demetri Catrakilis, has been released from his WP Rugby contract in order to join French Top 14 club, Montpellier.
The 26-year-old thus played his final match for DHL WP at DHL Newlands on Saturday, coming off the bench against the Steval Pumas to land two conversions from two attempts.
WP Director of Rugby Gert Smal told the www.wprugby.com website: “Demetri has always been the ultimate professional and he goes to France with our blessing.
“All of us at WP Rugby would like to wish him well for his future, but he will always remain a Province man in our eyes!”
Catrakilis made his DHL WP debut in 2011, playing a total of 58 provincial matches in the Blue & White and scoring 666 points in the process. He made his Vodacom Super Rugby debut in , playing 24 games for the DHL Stormers and scoring 211 points.
Catrakilis, who booted UCT to the 2011 Varsity Cup titleĀ in 2011, will best be remembered in Cape Town for his heroics in the 2012 Absa Currie Cup Final when his two drop-goals – one off each foot – helped DHL WP to a memorable triumph against the Sharks in Durban, ending an 11-year title drought for the team in Blue & White hoops.
Youngster Robert du Preez has stepped up in grand style for DHL WP during the 2015 Absa Currie Cup, with Kurt Coleman back from his calf injury this week and Dillyn Leyds also capable of playing in the No.10 jersey.
At youth level, meanwhile, Jean-Luc du Plessis, Brandon Thompson, Ernst Stapelberg and Ryno Eksteen have all been performing for the DHL WP Under-21s in 2015, with Aidynn Cupido starring for the Province U19s.
