De Jongh to start for Baa-Baas

PUBLISHED: October 29, 2014

DHL Western Province’s Absa Currie Cup-winning captain Juan de Jongh will start at outside centre for the Barbarians when they take on the Wallabies at Twickenham on Saturday (kick-off 16h30 SA time).

De Jongh jetted off to London Sunday evening, along with provincial colleague Michael Rhodes, just 24 hours after leading DHL WP to a second Absa Currie Cup triumph in three seasons.

It meant that De Jongh and Rhodes missed WP’s trophy parade through Cape Town on Tuesday, but both are expected to feature at some point for the Barbarians over the next week with Rhodes not named in the match-23 to take on the Wallabies at the home of English Rugby.

In fact, the fleet-footed De Jongh is the only South African in the Barbarians team for this weekend, with another five SA players on the bench – the Sharks’ Thomas du Toit and Lourens Adriaanse, Cheetahs stars Heinrich Brussow and Sarel Pretorius and Lions No.10 Marnitz Boshoff.

The Barbarians will conclude their two-match ‘tour’ with a game against English giants Leicester Tigers at Welford Road on Tuesday, November 4.

* Saturday’s match between the Baa-Baas and the Wallabies will be televised, live on SuperSport One at 16h30 SA time.
