Coetzee: ‘Mission accomplished’

PUBLISHED: September 21, 2014

It was a case of mission accomplished for coach Allister Coetzee, after DHL Western Province’s sixth win of the 2014 Absa Currie Cup season in Cape Town on Saturday.

DHL WP recorded a 36-12 win over Griquas at DHL Newlands, with the hosts scoring five tries to two as they converted their 24-0 lead into a deserved victory.

“Five points at home, I’ll say it’s mission accomplished for us, but I must add I was not overly happy with our performance,” Coetzee told www.wprugby.com on Saturday evening.

“We dropped off a bit when we held a big lead and it’s something we need to address this week at training (ahead of our game against the Pumas in Nelspruit).”

Speaking further about his team’s second-half performance, Coetzee added: “We allowed the opposition to get between us because we were trying things outside our structure.

“We paid the price for not being accurate for 80 minutes and it’s something that we need to rectify in the coming weeks.

“It was clear that the players were not happy with their display and probably that’s why they threw everything into the fray at the end,” he said.

First-time starters Sikhumbuzo Notshe (flank) and Justin Geduld (wing) more than justified their selections with three tries between them, whilst fit-again hooker Scarra Ntubeni celebrated his first Absa Currie Cup start of 2014 with a Man of the Match performance.

“Our selections (Notshe and Geduld) paid off,” said the DHL WP coach.

“Scarra hadn’t started a match in a long time and he’ll get better with time. I thought we scrummed well and our maul was excellent.”
