The WPRFU Score Club Sevens is underway, with pool matches taking place at Hamiltons Rugby Club, Goodwood Rugby Club and Faure Stadium in Paarl.
With 32 different clubs participating this year, the teams have been divided regionally into four pools of eight teams each.
All 480 players participating are fully vaccinated, with strict strict COVID-19 protocols in place at all venues.
The pool stages got underway on Saturday, November 6 and will continue this weekend, with the top two teams from each pool going through to the finals, which will be held at Newlands on Saturday, November 20.
In the Paarl-Stellenbosch pool Young Peoples won all three of their matches with a points difference of 71 to top the pool. They are level on 14 log points with Paarl Rangers, who won three of their four matches in the opening round. Stellenbosch are not far off the pace, with 12 points from their three matches and an impressive points difference of 77.
In the Helderberg pool Goodwood and Hands and Hearts made a strong start with three wins each. The unbeaten Hands and Hearts look serious contenders with a points difference of 111 from their three wins. Gordons Bay Pioneers and Scottsdene Central are both within striking distance of the top two, but will need to produce some top performance’s in the second round on Saturday.
In the southern pool Brackenfell, Hamiltons and Gardens all remain unbeaten after the first round, setting up an exciting second round in Sea Point this weekend. Brackenfell and Hamiltons both have a full house of 20 log points from their four games, with Brackenfell topping the log on points difference, while Gardens could force their way into the finals if they continue their winning ways on Saturday.
In the northern pool Durb-Bell are the only unbeaten side with four wins from four and a points difference of 125, so they look set to top the log and qualify for the finals. Bellville are currently in second place, with Collegians in third and Tygerberg in fourth. Both Collegians and Tygerberg will be hoping to force their way into the finals with some strong performances this weekend.
