Trio of rugby legends passes on

SARU rugby legends Charlie Davids, Japie Julies and Mnyaka Hendry Meleni have all sadly passed away this week.

All three men are remembered and celebrated for their immense contributions to rugby in the Western Province in their own way.

Davids was captain of the great former rugby club Meltons, captain of Northerns Rugby Football Union and the SA Rugby Federation.

He played alongside the likes of Charles Muller, Dougie Dyers and Gertjie Williams in his playing days before going on to serve as Manager of the Disa Team.

Julies was a formidable flank who played for the Lower Paarl RFC ‘Blues’. He went on to represent the Proteas and SA Federation before becoming a Boland selector.

Meleni was a renowned wing and centre who played for Western Province Federation and founded Young Ideas in Langa, serving as life president of the club.

The Western Province Rugby Family wishes to extends its deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the Davids, Williams and Meleni Families and Friends. May the Almighty comfort and strengthen them during the difficult period of mourning. May the Souls of Charlie Davids, Japie Julies and Mnyaka Hendry Meleni Rest in Eternal Peace.
