FEATURED

News from Danny’s desk

PUBLISHED: March 4, 2020

It’s heart-warming to see how far our club rugby friendships reach, as we saw another weekend filled with endorsed friendlies including clubs from our neighbouring districts. On Friday Tygerberg hosted Boland Club Roses United while on Saturday St Georges hosted Ashton RFC and Windmeul United were up against Young Stars from Wellington. One might consider the match between Sir Lowrians and Villiersdorp to be a derby match considering they are virtually neighbours. In addition to the above, the action started this Friday as UCT engaged their non-varsity cup players in matches against Villagers and Busy Bees. UCT went into the weekend second on the Varsity Cup log having won three from four, while Maties are unbeaten in third with three from three. This coming Monday sees Maties host Tuks and UCT host Wits while CPUT travel to the Peter Booysen stadium in Pietermaritzburg to play UKZN. Our club rugby players continue to enjoy the experience of playing for as a provincial squad as Coach Jerome Paarwater took his WPRFU XV to Wellington last weekend to play against Boland at Boland Park. This weekend saw the squad play at Newlands in a curtain-raiser to the DHL Stormers vs Blues match. These are certainly exciting times for these young players. The players will now return to their clubs to prepare for their first club rugby fixtures before they return to his fold when they play their first SuperSport Challenge match in April. As head of club rugby high performance, Jerome continues with his work helping the clubs. The next opportunity is this coming Wednesday, 4 March 2020, which sees all WP Club Rugby coaches invited to a specialist session on defence at the high-performance centre in Bellville at 6:30 pm. Our youth rugby structures are also up and running and fans will be happy to know that they can enjoy a full day of rugby at Newlands tomorrow as we see mini rugby action kick off at 10:15 with under 8 years old children from several different schools in Western Province having some fun. This weekend we host the second of our Boksmart courses at Brackenfell Primary School and you are reminded to register for the next course on 7 March at Newlands. Click here to sign up now. Our coaching courses keep rolling out with our next coaching course being the world rugby level 1 coaching course at Newlands on Friday 6 March 2020 from 12:00 to 19:00. If you are interested in signing up please email Nazeem Adams at [email protected] Our DHL Stormers remain unbeaten this year and we expect a great turnout at Newlands tomorrow as New Zealand outfit the Aukland Blues come to Newlands. Tickets are available through Computicket- either online at wprugby.computicket.com – or in-store and also from Shoprite/Checkers stores and the DHL Newlands Box OfficeGates will open at 10h00 Best RegardsDanny JonesWP Rugby
