LIVE: DHL WP v Toyota Cheetahs

DHL Western Province will be looking to start 2021 with a Carling Currie Cup win against the Toyota Cheetahs in Bloemfontein where it is overcast, but dry.

Following home bonus-point wins against Phakisa Pumas and Tafel Lager Griquas at DHL Newlands, DHL WP will be looking to show they can do the business on the road against the defending Carling Currie Cup champions.

0 – Kick-off in Bloemfontein where DHL WP are looking for their third consecutive Carling Currie Cup win as they go up against defending champions Toyota Cheetahs.

2 – Great defence first up from DHL WP as they fly off the line and it is wing Sergeal Petersen who makes a turnover at the breakdown on halfway, so the visitors can attack.

5 – Both teams look for territory early on, with Frans Steyn and Damian Willemse swapping booming kicks. DHL WP back on the attack with a lineout in opposition territory. Cheetahs do not release in the tackle in midfield and Tim Swiel opens the scoring with a penalty to put his team 3-0 up.

7 – DHL WP look to have scored from the restart, but it is disallowed by the TMO for accidental offside and the home side level it up at 3-3 with a penalty from Frans Steyn.

10 – The home side have the first scrum after a forward pass from Herschel Jantjies, but the Toyota Cheetahs engage early and it is reversed.

13 – Great kick from Damian Willemse finds touch in the 22. The Cheetahs take it quickly, but a big tackle from Jaco Coetzee forces a knock-on do DHL WP have a scrum 40 metres out.

15 – DHL WP win a scrum penalty and then launch a maul. It goes to Coetzee in midfield but he loses it forward and this time the Cheetahs win a scrum penalty so they can clear it.

18 – Pressure on the Cheetahs line-out and it is not straight. DHL WP then win the scrum penalty so they can set up an attacking line-out of their own.

21 – Another scrum penalty from the forwards and another breakdown penalty in midfield means another three points from the boot of Tim Swiel to put DHL WP 6-3 up.

24 – Both teams look for territory and a great chase from DHL WP has the home side caught in their 22. DHL WP will have an attacking l;ine-out following a water break in Bloemfontein.

26 – The Cheetahs go offside and Swiel has another shot at goal from just in front of halfway but the kick goes wide.

28 – A great chase from Angelos Davids and the Cheetahs go offside again so Swiel knocks the kick over to take the lead out to 9-3.

30 – Jaco Coetzee is blown up for going offside this time and Steyn lands a penalty from his own half to reduce the DHL WP lead to 9-6.

33 – A massive scrum from the DHL WP pack has the home side retreating fast. Swiel knocks the penalty over to take the lead out to 12-6.

37 – DHL WP blown up at the breakdown and Frans Steyn kicks another penalty from well inside his own half to reduce the visitors’ lead to 12-9.

40 – A huge scrum wins a penalty and they kick it into the corner for a maul. Jaco Coetzee peels off and runs over the last defender to score the opening try. That gives DHL WP a 17-9 lead at half-time in Bloemfontein.

44 – A storming start to the second half from DHL WP as they have the home side under pressure in their half. Toyota Cheetahs go offside again and Swiel kicks the penalty to take the lead out to 20-9.

48 – The Cheetahs with an attacking maul this time, but it is turned over and cleared by DHL WP.

50 – A forward pass from the Cheetahs and DHL WP kick long from the scrum. A great chase forces another forward pass and DHL WP have a scrum just outside the 22 this time.

52 – The Cheetahs go offside again and Swiel splits the uprights once more to make it 23-9.

57 – The Toyota Cheetahs score from a maul this time through hooker Wilmar Arnoldi. That reduces DHL WP’s lead to 23-16.

60 – A counter-attack from the Toyota Cheetahs results in a try from wing Rosko Specman which levels it up at 23-23 heading into the final 20 mins in Bloemfontein.

63 – The Toyota Cheetahs hit the lead for the first time in the game through a Frans Steyn penalty after DHL WP are blown up for offside. The home side go 26-23 up.

67 – A late charge off the ball hands DHL WP a penalty, they kick it in the corner and it pays off in a big way as a strong maul sees Bongi Mbonambi score to put them back in the lead at 28-26.

72 – The Toyota Cheetahs go back in the lead with another penalty from Frans Steyn following a scrum. That means DHL WP are 28-29 down.

80 – The forwards win a crucial late scrum penalty to give Tim Swiel a kick to win the game. He absolutely nails it to claim a dramatic 31-29 win for DHL WP against the Toyota Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.
