LIVE: DHL WP v Cell C Sharks

DHL Western Province play their first Carling Currie Cup game at their new home Cape Town Stadium and it is a coastal clash against the Cell C Sharks.

There have been heavy rains in Cape Town over the last week and it is cool and cloudy here, but no rain yet as the teams warm up.

0 – The Sharks win the kick-off back, but Ward puts it out on the full so DHL WP have a line-out near halfway.

2 – Throw is not straight and the Sharks have the first scrum, but DHL WP are awarded a penalty. Swiel kicks for touch so they will have another line-out in the corner.

4 – Solid maul is brought down just short, forwards have a go and win a penalty. Swiel kicks it over to put DHL WP 3-0 up.

6 – Sharks win a penalty and go to the backline, the ball goes loose in midfield and is picked up by Swiel, but another wild pass is intercepted. The Sharks look to have scored in the corner but it was knocked on, so DHL WP have a scrum on their tryline.

9 – A good clearance and the Sharks are forced into touch so DHL WP have it back but the lineout is stolen.

12 – Both teams kick for territory and it is DHL WP who win a high ball in Sharks half. It goes wide, but a horrible pass to Senatla goes into touch.

14 – DHL WP playing in opposition territory and it pays off as a loose ball is picked up by Paul de Wet. The scrumhalf hits some space on the outside and has too much pace. That try takes the lead out to 10-0.

17 – The Sharks hit back with a try from flank Thembelani Bholi who barges over from close range. That reduces DHL WP’s lead to 10-7.

20 – Another penalty from the boot of Tim Swiel whose radar is on point tonight. That stretches DHL WP’s lead out to 13-7.

23 – Another breakdown penalty means another three points from flyhalf Tim Swiel. DHL WP lead now 16-7.

29 – Sharks with another try forced over the line from close range. DHL WP still have the lead but it has been cut to 16-14.

31 – Another breakdown penalty and dead-eye Tim Swiel splits the uprights from 39 metres out to take DHL WP’s lead out to 19-14.

35 – Sharks hit the lead for the first time, with a counter-attacking try which started in their own 22. That puts them 21-19 ahead with five mins before half-time.

40 – DHL WP defend their line again and hold out well to clear the danger. Sharks take a two-point lead into the break, big second half coming up.

42 – What a start to the second half from DHL WP! Linebreak from Sergeal Petersen who gets it away to Evan Roos and the big No.8 carries a defender on his back for 10 metres to score and put his side 26-21 up.

45 – Another penalty from Tim Swiel makes it 10 unanswered points in the first five mins of the first half from DHL WP. Whatever was said at half-time clearly worked. That takes their lead out to 29-21.

51 – Sharks come from close range to score again, with hooker Fez Mbatha going over this time. DHL WP lead is now 29-28 in this Carling Currie Cup nailbiter.

55 – A skew throw at the line-out and then a scrum penalty has DHL WP back in their 22 as the Sharks press for the lead again.

58 – Set move from a line-out and Johan du Toit breaks the line and gets an offload away to Cornel Smit but he loses it forward in the act of scoring.

60 – New props for DHL WP in Lyons and Sandi but the Sharks get a scrum penalty and can clear it.

62 – Knock-on from the Sharks so DHL WP have a scrum on halfway. Scrum penalty for DHL WP this time so their turn to have a line-out in the 22.

64 – DHL WP come close, but the Sharks win a breakdown penalty and clear it again.

65 – Skew throw from the Sharks this time so DHL WP have a scrum on halfway, but the Sharks get another penalty and Bosch has a shot from halfway but it goes wide.

68 – Sharks with possession in their own half and they win a penalty at a line-out so they can kick for touch again.

72 – Great defence from DHL WP and they win a turnover. They work their way upfield and a kick from Pretorius is won in the air by Van der Merwe. He goes into the 22 but loses it forward just short of the line.

73 – Sharks awarded another scrum penalty and they clear it into DHL WP half.

75 – Sharks awarded a breakdown penalty and Bosch kicks it over to put them ahead 31-29.

77 – DHL WP respond with Swiel’s sixth three-pointer to take their one-point lead back.

80 – DHL WP hold on for a tense one-point win in their first Carling Currie Cup game at Cape Town Stadium.
