DHL Western Province are in action against the Airlink Pumas in a Carling Currie Cup clash in Nelspruit tonight.
There are four changes to the DHL WP starting line-up, with props Kwenzo Blose and Neethling Fouche, hooker Jacques van Zyl and lock Ernst van Rhyn all in the team, while hooker HP van Schoor and wing Ebenezer Tshimanga are set to make their debuts from the bench.
Conditions are good in Nelspruit with a good crowd in so we should be set for a good match.
0 – Action underway and the Pumas get an early breakdown penalty. Fouche has a shot at goal but pushes it wide.
3 – Leyds fields a high ball and returns the kick. Both teams looking for territory early on.
5 – Ball lost forward by Sergeal Petersen, so the Pumas have an early scrum. Scrum penalty for DHL WP, so Swiel can kick for touch.
6 – Xaba takes the line-out and they get a good maul going. Pumas in from the side so it’s another penalty and Swiel kicks to the corner.
8 – Ball pops out of the maul and the Pumas clear it.
10 – Some counter-attack magic from Tim Swiel with the chip and chase and it is kept alive for Godlen Masimla to score under the sticks. That’s first blood to DHL WP in Nelspruit as they go 7-0 up.
12 – Another attacking opportunity as it goes wide, but it is lost forward by Smit, so Pumas have a scrum in their 22. Another scrum penalty so Swiel kicks to the corner again.
15 – First try was the backs, this one is all forward power. A strong maul puts them in position and it is Neethling Fouche who goes over for the second try to make it 12-0.
18 – 50-22 from Devon Williams hits the corner flag so the Pumas have an attacking line-out.
20 – It’s a maul try from hooker Swart which reduces DHL WP’s lead to 12-5.
22 – Breakdown penalty goes against the Pumas this time, so Swiel kicks out on the 22 to set up the attack. High tackle on Smit so Swiel kicks the penalty to make it 15-5.
26 – Another maul try from the Airlink Pumas as prop Corne Fourie goes over to make it a five-point game at 15-10.
28 – Scrum in the 22 for DHL WP. They go to the blindside and Sergeal Petersen goes over for the third try to make it 20-10.
32 – Pumas with an attacking line-out, but there is a foot in touch so DHL WP get it back.
34 – Pumas win a penalty for offside, but Fouche puts it wide again.
36 – Knock-on from Xaba who got a terrible pass, so Pumas have a scrum near halfway. Scrum penalty for the Pumas this time and they kick for the corner.
38 – Xaba turns it over at the breakdown and the Pumas go offside so Swiel can clear.
40 – Ben-Jason Dixon shown a yellow card for a side entry, but the Pumas can’t score and are tackled into touch. DHL WP down to 14 but take a 20-10 lead into the break.
42 – Bright start to the second half from DHL WP. Pumas flank Anele Lungisa shown yellow for a high tackle so numbers are even. Ernst van Rhyn blown up at a maul so Pumas have it back on halfway.
44 – Both teams do some kicking and Pumas knock a loose ball on so DHL WP have a scrum on halfway.
46 – Fouche puts a kick out on the full, so DHL WP have it back from a line-out. Strong maul goes into the 22 but the Pumas win a breakdown penalty to clear it.
48 – Xaba wins a breakdown penalty this time, so DHL WP can kick to the corner. Line-out overthrown so the Pumas can attack.
52 – Counter-attack from Petersen and he grubbers but it is picked up by Williams who runs it into the corner. Ernst van Rhyn shown yellow for a side entry. Pumas maul it over, but it is lost forward.
54 – Swiel clears and the Pumas try a cross-kick but it is knocked on so DHL WP have a scrum just outside the 22 this time. Scrum penalty won so Swiel can kick for touch.
56 – Strong maul before it goes to the backline but the ball is lost forward so the Pumas have it back just outside their 22 and they win a scrum penalty this time.
58 – Leyds come across on cover defence but he is taken into touch in-goal, so the Pumas have an attacking scrum.
60 – Pumas scrumhalf Chriswill September scrambles over the line for their third try to make it 20-17 heading into the last 20.
61 – DHL WP respond immediately with a penalty from Tim Swiel to make it a six-point lead as they go back to 15 men with Ernst van Rhyn back from his yellow card.
64 – Swiel has another shot from halfway after a scrum penalty but it comes up short. Some big tackles and the ball is knocked loose so DHL WP have a scrum. Pumas win a scrum penalty and kick to the corner.
65 – Crucial turnover from Xaba again, he has been incredible at the breakdown tonight.
67 – Swiel misses touch and the Pumas counter, but they are tackled out just short of the tryline.
68 – Swiel clears and they come up on defence well to knock the ball loose again.
71 – Good kicking from Petersen who turns the Pumas backs and the defence is up quickly. Pumas kick and Petersen is there again to grubber into touch in the 22.
73 – Pumas win a chip kick and then Fouche puts a 50-22 into touch so they have the advantage on attack again. Great maul defence wins a crucial scrum.
74 – Breakdown penalties go both ways, with the result being a clearance from Swiel as DHL WP hang on.
76 – More great defence knocks the ball loose so DHL WP have a scrum on the 22. Swiel clears up to halfway.
77 – Another knock-on from the Pumas, so DHL WP have a scrum on halfway. Ball lost forward in the tackle and Pumas kick long as the stadium lights go out.
79 – Time is up and the Pumas will have one last chance to win it. DHL WP win the ball back and they have claimed the win. Incredible character under pressure.
