DHL Western Province scored five tries in their 34-17 bonus-point win against Tafel Lager Griquas at DHL Newlands on Boxing Day.
It was a composed performance from the home team, who controlled the match well throughout to make it another five-pointer in the Carling Currie Cup.
DHL Western Province started with real intent and an early scrum penalty gave them the opportunity to kick it into the corner and maul, with hooker Bongi Mbonambi crashing over for the opening try.
Flyhalf Tim Swiel added the conversion and slotted a penalty soon afterwards, when the Tafel Lager Griquas failed to roll away after bringing Steven Kitshoff down.
The second try also came via a line-out, but this time it was the backline as Dan du Plessis ran a great line to break through the defensive line and race 30 metres to score.
The Tafel Lager Griquas came into the game towards the end of the first half and eventually scored through wing Eduan Keyter, but it was the home side who took a 17-7 advantage into the half-time break.
The visitors were first to score in the second half as flyhalf Tinus de Beer kicked a penalty, but DHL Western Province responded with another powerful maul and another try for hooker Bongi Mbonambi.
They followed that up soon afterwards with the fourth try as Rikus Pretorius and Juarno Augustus both made good ground before Jaco Coetzee forced his way over next to the posts.
After absorbing some pressure from the visitors, DHL Western Province marched upfield and replacement hooker Chad Solomon got over for a maul try in his 50th game for DHL Western Province.
The visitors pressed hard towards the end of the game as they looked for a late consolation and it eventually came from replacement Siba Qoma who forced his way over just before the hooter.
