Durbanville-Bellville beat defending champions Maties 22-13 to claim the spoils in the African Bank Super League A Final at DHL Newlands on Tuesday.

There was plenty of thrilling action at DHL Newlands on Heritage Day as the annual club rugby competition welcomed new sponsor African Bank.

A vibrant crowd gathered at DHL Newlands for a day of top club rugby, which saw three action-packed finals play out.

An impressive defensive effort from Durbanville-Bellville kept defending champions Maties to just one try, from centre David Brits, in the Super League A final. Tries from Rennie Brink and Karl Liebenberg, along with four penalties from Raymond Olivier were enough to seal the 22-13 victory and spark jubilation among the Durbanville-Bellville players and supporters at DHL Newlands.

The Super League B final was a closely contested affair, with Kuilsriver doing enough to beat Hamlets 17-13. Both teams scored a single try each, but it was the boot of Springbok Earl Rose that proved the difference for Kuilsriver as he slotted three penalties and a drop goal to guide his team to the title.

Langa RFC outscored Scottsdene Central by three tries to two to win 26-14 and claim the Super League C title. Zimasa Malunga, Siviwe Cakasayo and Anathi Ndukwana all crossed the whitewash for Langa, with Nkululeko Feks adding three penalties and a conversion in what was ultimately a comfortable win.

Western Province Rugby Football Union President Zelt Marais said that it was fantastic to see the passion for club rugby at DHL Newlands.

“There was an incredible competitive spirit both on and off the pitch at DHL Newlands, with the spirit of the game upheld in every sense. The quality of rugby on display was very high and what an appropriate way to celebrate Heritage Day. Thanks to African Bank for their support,” he said.
