It was a double delight for local University Rugby as Maties won another Varsity Cup and Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) claimed their first Varsity Shield title.
In addition to those two successful Varsity campaigns, Durbell also played in the Gold Cup final which they lost against Rustenberg Impala away from home, showcasing the considerable strength of club rugby in the Western Cape.
Maties made it a record five Varsity Cup titles as they beat UP-Tuks 34-12 in the final at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch on Monday, to cap an unbeaten season.
The final victory saw them take their winning streak in Varsity Cup matches out to 20 games, underlining their dominance of the competition.
CPUT made history in their own way as they took the Varsity Shield for the first time in just their second season in the competition.
They had to come from behind in the final in Port Elizabeth against the previously unbeaten NMMU Madibaz.
A late try from scrumhalf George-Lee Erasmus saw CPUT snatch a dramatic 32-28 win, having trailed 22-10 at the half-time break.
This makes it the second straight season that there are two Varsity trophies in the Cape, with UWC having won the Varsity Shield last year to gain promotion and Maties taking what was their fourth title.
