DHL WP U16 march on at Grant Khomo Week

PUBLISHED: June 27, 2019

DHL Western Province U16 claimed a 44-12 victory against Free State Cheetahs U16 on Day Two of the Under-16 SA Rugby Grant Khomo Week at HS Rob Ferreira in White River.

The Cape side scored six sublime tries to notch their second win, their speedy backline and the good interplay with their mobile pack of forwards had the Free Staters tackling thin air at times. Such was their dominance they led 31-5 at halftime.

Free State made a brief recovery in the second half, but there was always going to be one winner. In fact, based on this performance, it may be hard for anyone topple the Cape side when the final matches are played on Friday. Their six tries were all sublime, and Keagan Smith scored his second hat-trick in as many matches.

The SWD Eagles, meanwhile, played to two thrilling draws against the Free State Cheetahs and Sharks on Monday and Wednesday respectively, meaning they too have not yet tasted defeat.

As with the SWD versus Sharks clash, a number of matches went down to the wire, which made for exciting match-ups on the second day of the age group competition.
