WPRFU President praises clubs’ spirit

PUBLISHED: September 25, 2015

Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) President, Mr Thelo Wakefield, has thanked all the clubs in action in the 2015 President’s Cup Finals Day, after a successful finale to the 2015 Club Rugby Season at DHL Newlands.

Hamiltons were crowned the 2015 knockout champions in Super League A, with Hands & Heart (Super League B) and Young Stars (SLC) also lifting silverware in front of a vibrant crowd on Heritage Day.

But it was not just about the winning clubs, with the WPRFU President also praising the runners-up, Durb-Bell (SLA), Union Milnerton (SLB) and Kraaifontein (SLC), for playing their parts in a memorable finale to the 2015 club year.

“First and foremost, I need to thank the clubs for the spirit in which all the games were played,” said Mr Wakefield on Friday.

“Trophies were up for grabs, as well as bragging rights, yet you could not have asked for a better spirit in which the games were played.”

Over 4,500 people attended the day’s action at DHL Newlands, and a pleased Mr Wakefield added: “It’s the second President’s Cup Final at DHL Newlands and after the success of last year it was so heartening to see even more support yesterday. I cannot wait to see what next year’s event has in store for us!

“All the clubs who played yesterday deserve a word of thanks. You can see all the hard work that went into it and it was just so pleasing to see three quality matches – all of which went down to the wire – and so much pride on display.”

Young Stars – who fought back from a half-time deficit to defeat Kraaifontein in a dramatic kick-out in the SLC Final – were deservedly voted the President’s Cup Team of the Tournament.

Hands & Heart, who had about 1,000 supporters present on the day, and Uni-Mil, who were not far behind, were voted the best supported teams at DHL Newlands, with both clubs being rewarded with cash prizes of R5,000 for their efforts.

There were also ten SUPER FAN winners crowned, with 10 lucky fans receiving a cash prize of R500, as well as a replica DHL Western Province jersey for their efforts.

“It was truly was an enjoyable day,” Mr Wakefield told the official www.wprugby.com website.

“Aside from the clubs – the players, coaches and administrators – I must pay tribute to the fans, plus those who worked so tirelessly behind the scenes to make the day happen and, of course, our amazing sponsors. Thank you, Totalsports, the Treble Group, Castle Lager, Powerade, DHL, Builders Warehouse, Deep Heat and TJ’s, we could not have done this without you.”
