The Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) will pay tribute to the life of former Western Province and Springbok great Lionel Wilson with a minute’s silence before the Currie Cup clash between DHL Western Province and the Tafel Lager Griquas at DHL Newlands on Saturday.
Wilson, a product of Wynberg Boys High and Villager RFC, passed away peacefully in Napier, New Zealand last week at the age of 84.
The skilful fullback made his Springbok debut in 1960 against the All Blacks and would go on to earn 27 caps in five years for the national team.
President of the Western Province Rugby Football Union, Mr Thelo Wakefield, said that Wilson will be remembered as a fullback of the highest quality.
“Lionel Wilson played school, club and provincial rugby in Western Province before going on to the national side.
“He will go down as a humble yet immensely skilful player and it is only fitting that we pay tribute to his memory with a minute’s silence at DHL Newlands,” he said.
