There will be a minute’s silence held before the Currie Cup clash between DHL Western Province and Toyota Free State Cheetahs at DHL Newlands in memory of former SA Rugby Federation player Piet Boonzaaier who has sadly passed away.

Boonzaaier was a renowned lock forward from Stellenbosch who played for the Proteas against the All Blacks in Goodwood in 1976 and was renowned as a character of the game who was a stalwart in his community and a role model for many younger players.

President of the Western Province Rugby Football Union, Mr Thelo Wakefield, said that Boonzaaier should be remembered for his important role in South African rugby.

“Piet Boonzaaier was a fearsome player who inspired many with the way he played the game, but also made a significant contribution off the field .

“It is only fitting that we recognise him in the appropriate manner by holding a minute’s silence at DHL Newlands,” he said.
