The Western Province Women’s team beat the Blue Bulls by 25-20 in the SARU Women’s Inter-Provincial Championship Final at the Theo Marais Stadium in Milnerton on Saturday afternoon.

The WP women – under the coaching of Aslam Abrahams and the management of Nolene Oosthuizen – were playing in just their second National Final, after winning their first provincial crown in 2010.

WP and the Blue Bulls dished up an entertaining Cup Final and the crowd was treated to some very enterprising, attacking rugby from the two best and in-form Women’s teams in South Africa.

Springbok Women’s veteran Yolanda Meiring and Marithy Pienaar were outstanding for the Bulls while Zimkita Ntsilana, Vuyokazi Mbonda and Verushka Grain did well for WP.

The spectators were also treated to a good match in the main curtain raiser between Mpumalanga and Limpopo Blue Bulls.

Meanwhile, the Pumas women came out victorious and annexed their second consecutive title in the B-Section Final.

The score of 38-12 points to a comprehensive victory, but the winning team will admit that they did not have it all their own way, especially during a close-fought first half.

However, the Pumas Women piled on the pressure after the break and their dominance overpowered the gallant effort from the Limpopo girls.

After the completion of the domestic competition, the attention now turns to Women’s Sevens rugby, with the SA Sevens female team set to compete in Dubai in December while an SA Under 16 Girls team will compete in January at the Australian Youth Olympics.
