WP U21s secure home semi – already

PUBLISHED: October 1, 2013

The DHL Western Province Under-21s have already booked a home semifinal in the 2013 Absa Provincial Under-21 Championship with two rounds of league action to spare.

As things stand now, the Western Province Under-21s need only two more points to guarantee first pace on the log, the Men from the Cape boasting a massive 44 points from ten matches.

Province opened their 2013 campaign with a narrow away loss to the Toyota Free State Cheetahs U21s, but have since won nine matches in succession. In the process, WP's U21s have scored 388 points and conceded just 164.

Flyhalf Tim Swiel is the joint top points-scorer in the tournament with 120 points, whilst backs Craig Barry (six tries) and Devon Williams (five tries) are amongst the top try-scorers in the competition.

The Sharks, meanwhile, require just one point to cement their semifinal spot, whilst the Blue Bulls – like DHL Western Province – have also secured a semifinal place. However, should the fifth-placed FS Cheetahs fail to win both their remaining games by big margins, the Sharks will be guaranteed a top-four finish.

With the Lions boasting only a seven-point lead over the Bloemfontein team, they need at least two points from their remaining games to secure a semifinal berth should the Free State win both their matches.

In this past weekend's games the Vodacom Blue Bulls defeated the MTN Golden Lions 40-25 in Johannesburg, the Sharks thumped the Leopards 33-13 in Durban and DHL Western Province beat Border 74-12 in East London. (Match report HERE!)

WP, under the coaching of John Dobson, will host the Golden Lions Under-21s in their next outing – at DHL Newlands this Saturday (kick-off 11h45).
