The DHL Western Province Under-21 team bounced back from last week’s opening-round defeat to record a convincing 55-10 win over the Leopards on Saturday.
The Province Under-21s led 29-3 at half-time, having racked up the four-try bonus point within the opening forty minutes of play at City Park in Athlone.
In all, WP scored eight tries and conceded just one – that after trailing by 0-3 after just a few minutes of action.
Lively scrumhalf Godlen Masimla scored two tries in the first half, whilst right-wing Dillyn Leyds – who roamed the field with authority – scored a hat-trick of tries (one try in the first half and two in the second).
Flyhalf Tim Swiel kicked six conversions and one penalty (and he also scored a try) for the rampant WP team, who suffered a last-minute loss to Free State last weekend.
This performance, however, was just what the doctor ordered and coach John Dobson was pleased with his team’s character.
“We spoke a lot this week about playing to our potential and this was a step in the right direction. It was by no means perfect, but it’s great to get back to winning ways – especially ahead of next week’s big game against the Blue Bulls.”
