WP too good for Blue Bulls at Coca-Cola Under-16 Grant Khomo Week

PUBLISHED: July 4, 2012

Western Province sent out a clear message that they are the team to beat at this year’s Coca-Cola Under-16 Grant Khomo Week in Johannesburg when they ran out comfortable 36-5 (halftime 15-5) winners over the Blue Bulls in the main match on day two.

There were also wins on Tuesday at the University of Johannesburg for Griquas, Border, Lions XV, Boland, Zimbabwe, EP, Valke, Free State and the Leopards.

WP, who needed an injury-time penalty from fullback Tiaan Swanepoel to beat tournament hosts the Lions 21-19 on the opening day, made sure of their victory by scoring four excellent tries against their northern rivals. Swanepoel once again had a hand in the win, kicking a conversion and two penalties.

WP’s tries came from hooker Rudolf Brits, lock Pieter Jordaan, wing Veranzo Pipers and centre Edrich Venter, while Shadeur Mhlanga crossed for the Bulls’ only points.

In Tuesday’s opening match, Griquas eighthman Gerhard Holtzhausen emulated the performance of Limpopo No 8 Hendrik Luüs on day one by scoring four tries in his side’s 35-6 win over Border Country Districts.
