WP jou lekker ding! – DHL WP win the Vodacom Cup

PUBLISHED: May 18, 2012

DHL WP tonight won their first ever Vodacom Cup, beating the GWK Griquas 20-18 in dramatic fashion in Kimberley. In doing so they remained unbeaten the entire season, a remarkable record.

Despite finishing top of the South Section and being the only unbeaten side in the competition, the venue of the final was, GWK Park, Kimberley, the venue of the top team from the North Section. This was in accordance with a decision taken a while ago that the venue of the final of the Vodacom Cup will alternate between north and south (should teams from the relevant section reach the final). Last year the final was held at the venue of the top team from the south that made the final (Pampas XV in Potch) and this year it was at the home ground of the top team from the north, GWK Griquas in Kimberley.

Always a tough ground to play at the victory was bitter sweet for the coach John Dobson. “We would have loved to have played and won in front of the Faithful at DHL Newlands. Instead we did it the hard way. The win means a lot to this team and showcases some of the talent and depth that this Union has started to deliver. The structures and environment are great at Province and this is proof of the strides taken in recent years.” The coach thanked the Faithful and all that had supported and helped the squad achieve this goal. “It’s special and we hope you will all enjoy it with us – WP Jou Lekker Ding!”
