The DHL Western Province Emerging team opened their 2013 Southern Amateur Provincial Competition campaign with a comfortable 41-8 win over a Boland XV in Saldanha on Monday.
The WP side, captained by scrumhalf Freddie Muller, scored five tries to one and led 27-3 at half-time.
There was to be not let-up from the Emerging WP team in the second half either, as they racked up a further 24 points to start their title defence on a high.
Captain Muller kicked all five conversions on offer, and also added two penalty goals, with fullback Vivian Fredericks, wing Craig Pheiffer, flyhalf Shane Vallender, No.8 José Julies and loosehead prop Christo McNish scoring tries.
Tuesday is a day-off for all the teams in Saldanha, with the DHL WP Emerging team’s next fixture against Eastern Province on Wednesday at 17h30.
The final round of matches, featuring the Cup and Plate Finals, will be contested on Friday. Those fixtures will be confirmed after Wednesday’s second round of action.
