The unbeaten DHL Western Province Disa side will battle it out with the KZN Wildebeest in the final of the 2014 Sub-Union South tournament in Kimberley on Friday, following another round of impressive victories on Wednesday.
The KwaZulu-Natal team won the competition in style last year with a 41-12 victory in the final against Eastern Province, but they will be up against a determined Disa team.
The Wildebeest thumped SWD 39-17 in their Round Two clash on Wednesday and DHL Western Province registered a 42-33 victory against neighbours Boland to book their places in the final.
In the other matches, meanwhile, Griquas defeated the Free State 32-20 and Eastern Province secured a convincing 49-26 victory over Border.
The Wildebeest were dominant in their showing against SWD as they scored six tries to only two by the George side. They built up an encouraging 22-3 lead at the break, and while the opposition tried hard to force their way back into the match, the KwaZulu-Natal team had too much firepower and earned a 39-17 victory.
The clash between the WP Disa’s and Boland proved to be thrilling despite a disappointing first-half showing by the Wellington side. Western Province cruised to a 35-0 lead at the break, but Boland bounced back with a bang to score five second-half tries and limited Province to a converted try only in the second half. This try, however, proved to be the difference on the scoreboard at the end of the match.
Eastern Province delivered a fine performance in all areas of their game to dominate proceedings throughout their clash against Border, while Griquas used their point-scoring chances well in the second half against Free State to overcome a hard-fought first half.
In the final day of the competition on Friday, the KZN Wildebeest will meet the DHL WP Disa’s in the final while SWD and Boland will battle it out in the third- and fourth-place play-off. Griquas and Eastern Province, meanwhile, will meet in the Plate Final and Free State will take on Border in the seventh- and eighth-place play-off.
