Women’s Day at City Park

PUBLISHED: August 12, 2013

The 2013 Under-18 International Rugby Series played at City Park in Athlone on Friday saw a few more milestones added to the illustrious history of this popular sporting venue.

It was the first time in nearly 60 years of City Park’s existence that the national anthem was played for a national sports team at the ground.

For many City Park stalwarts the moment brought a lump to the throat and a tear to the eye, whilst the anthems of France, Wales and England added to the significance of the day.

The venue was further boosted when England Rugby Football Union President, Bob Reece, handed over a momentum to commemorate – in his words – “one of the best rugby pitches in the world that I have ever seen at this level”.

The recently revamped venue, thanks to a generous donation from the Sports Trust, was also commended by Western Province Rugby President Thelo Wakefield for presenting a superbly-organised event.

The results of the day saw the SA Schools (Under-18s) fend off a powerful England U18 side 19-14, whilst Wales completely overpowered the French 48-17. The two WP Schools’ sides dented Montpellier 36-31 and Italy 39-17, respectively. (Click HERE for more match information.)

The Under-18 international teams now travel to George for the next leg of the tournament on Wednesday.
