Winning start for WP Disa team

PUBLISHED: September 17, 2013

The DHL Western Province Disa team made a winning start to their SARU Southern Sub-Union campaign in Margate, beating SWD 20-6 on Monday.

WP’s balanced performance earned them three tries, through fullback Dennies Weller-Blaber, scrumhalf Harry Finger and lock Martin Coetzee.

In the process, the WP Disa team also prevented SWD from crossing their tryline. SWD managed just two penalties on the day in the face of some determined Province defence.

The second round of matches will take place on Wednesday, and the final round on Friday. In the main matches on Wednesday, the WP Disa’s will take on Eastern Province and the KZN Wildebeest XV will go up against Griquas.

The WP Disa team is playing in the SARU Southern Regions tournament – one of two sub-union competitions hosted annually. The Northern Sub-Union competition was hosted in Kempton Park in July, with hosts the Valke being crowned the champions.

The Southern Regions competition runs from Monday to Friday and features eight provincial teams made up of the best non-contracted players registered to non-premier league clubs of the southern-unions. These teams are Free State, Griquas, Eastern Province, Boland, Western Province Disa, SWD, Border and the KZN Wildebeest XV.
