Three-time defending Southern Amateur Provincial Championship winners, the DHL Western Province Emerging team, on Monday recorded a strong start to the 2015 edition of the tournament by securing a convincing 62-24 victory against Boland.

The first half was tight as the DHL Western Province Emerging side held a slender 17-10 lead against the Boland XV going into the break, but they found their rhythm in the second half and tightened up their defence, which allowed them to take control of the match.

With the team on form on attack they scored an encouraging 10 tries, while they limited the Boland XV to four tries at the Smit Sports Grounds in Velddrif.

Eastern Province also started the tournament on an encouraging note, as they defeated Border 30-12. The teams were involved in a tight first-half tussle with Eastern Province leading by just 8-3 at half-time against the East London neighbours, but they used their point-scoring chances well in the second half, which allowed them to inflate their score significantly.

In the other matches, SWD defeated EP Rural 33-27 and Boland A pipped Border Rural 11-10.

DHL Western Province will meet Eastern Province in the main match in the second round on Wednesday, while SWD will battle it out with Boland A, the Boland XV will go up against Border, and EP Rural will line up against Border Rural.
