Triple injury-boost for WP U21s

PUBLISHED: October 23, 2013

The DHL Western Province Under-21 team has received a triple injury-boost ahead of this weekend’s Absa Provincial Under-21 Final against the Blue Bulls at DHL Newlands.

The WP Juniors claimed a dramatic 44-41 semifinal win over the Golden Lions last weekend and did so without star men Oliver Kebble (loosehead prop), Rayn Smid (No.8) and Kobus van Wyk (inside centre).

With lock Gerbrandt Grobler (ankle) and utility forward Jurie van Vuuren (ankle) both ruled out for the remainder of the season, the potential return of Kebble, Smid and Van Wyk will be a massive boost to the table-topping DHL WP U21 outfit.

WP U21 coach John Dobson told www.wprugby.com: “The guys had to dig deep against the Lions (in the semifinls) and the return of Ollie, Rayn and Kobus will add to our depth – which, of course, I have spoken about all season – at a crucial stage.

“We're expecting an almighty tussle against the Bulls on Saturday and having forwards like Ollie and Rayn back will make a massive difference. Kobus, too, is a key man for us and it will give us two big centres in him and Pat Howard.

“We're thrilled to be playing in a home final at DHL Newlands but would love to go one better than last year when we lost (in the final) in Durban.”

The WP Under-21s qualified for a home semifinal after winning 11 from 12 matches in the regular season, which saw them pick up 54 log points – 13 points ahead of their nearest challengers in second place. In the process, the WP U21s scored a massive 478 points and conceded just 193.

The Province team – to take on the Bulls on Saturday (kick-off 14h30) – will be announced on Thursday morning.
