Swanepoel boots DHL WP U19s to victory

PUBLISHED: August 28, 2015

Fullback Tiaan Swanepoel scored 21 points to help the DHL Western Province Under-19s to a hard-fought 26-25 win over the Free State Under-21s in Bloemfontein on Friday afternoon.

Swanepoel scored one try and kicked two conversions and four penalty goals to help his team overcome a second-half wobble to claim their fourth win of the 2015 Absa Provincial Under-19 season.

The DHL WP U19s led 16-0 at half-time, thanks to a well-taken Edrich Venter try and a conversion and three penalties by Swanepoel – deapite a late yellow card to scrumhalf Paul de Wet.

The hosts made their one-man advantage count four minutes into the second half, when fullback Christiaan Nel scored, but a brilliant Eduan Keyter break found Swanepoel in support – over the goalline – to extend the Province lead to 23-5 after 44 minutes.

Free State”s comeback picked up momentum as they clawed their way back to 20-23 down between minutes 49 and 57, before a Swanepoel penalty in the 60th minute put the DHL WP Under-19s ahead by 26-20.

No.8 Victor Maruping scored the hosts” fourth try with five minutes left, only for Ruan Wasserman to miss the tricky conversion from out wide, and the DHL Western Province Under-19s managed to hang on for a valuable victory on the road.

The result has moved the DHL WP U19s into second place on the log, in the seventh round of competition, but the Blue Bulls (just three points behind) are yet to play this weekend.
