DHL Western Province U21 scored six tries on their way to a 46-28 victory against Toyota Free State Cheetahs U21 at DHL Newlands on Friday.

After showing great defensive discipline to soak up some early pressure from the visitors, DHL Western Province were first to score when fullback Grant Hermanus kicked an early penalty.

The Free State side was reduced to 14 men when hooker Joseph Dweba was shown a yellow card for repeated infringements from his team, and the hosts took full advantage as tighthead prop Frans van Wyk crashed over from the resulting driving maul to put them 10-0.

They were not done there though as first right wing Duncan Saal crossed the whitewash after getting a great offload from centre Ryan Oosthuizen before No.8 Jaco Coetzee stormed over to give them a commanding 24-0 advantage after just 20 minutes.

The visitors managed to get on the scoreboard with a try from scrumhalf Tyron Goddard, and things got tougher for DHL Western Province U21 when Coetzee was shown a yellow card for tackling a man in the air.

However, the home side were next to strike through two quick tries from lock Jaco Willemse who first scored from a driving maul before storming through a gap on the 22 to dot down under the poles.

Toyota Free State Cheetahs U21 had the final say in a frenetic first half as left wing JP Coetzee got over for their second try which made it 38-14 to DHL Western Province U21 at half-time.

The visitors were first to strike in the second half as they forced their way over in the corner, and they followed that up with another try from replacement Johann Grundlingh to close the gap to 38-28 with 15 minutes left.

The hosts got themselves on the front foot and had two tries disallowed for forward passes, but eventually got their sixth try when replacement Christo van der Merwe scored in the corner at the death.
