The race for the President’s Cup final spots is heating up, with six big semifinals set to take place in the communities this weekend.

The President’s Cup is an annual Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) Club Rugby competition, which sees the top six teams in each of the top three Super Leagues, (Super League A, B and C) battle it out for the President’s Cup trophies.

The President’s Cup finals, which are sponsored by Totalsports, Treble Group, Powerade, Deep Heat, Castle Lager, TJ’s Lekka Braai and Cape Rugby TV, will take place at DHL Newlands on Heritage Day, 24th September.

In the Super League A semifinals, there will be two titanic tussles when League Champions False Bay host Victorians, whilst Maties will take on rivals Hamiltons, who will be hoping to make it a third visit to DHL Newlands in a row having played in the last two President’s Cup finals.

In the Super League B semifinals, Champions Union-Milnerton will be hoping to make their third consecutive trip to DHL Newlands, when they take on Bellville at Theo Marais Park. Bellville were the only side to beat the champions this season and they will look to repeat that trick and book a final berth.

In the other semifinal Pniel Villagers host Hamlets. Pniel will be smarting having been pipped to the Super League B title by Union-Milnerton and will be desperate to add silverware to crown what has already been a successful season.

In the Super League C semifinals, League Champions Rangers host Langa at Surrey Estate knowing they will have a battle on their hands as the visitors are no pushovers. Langa remains a match for any team on their day and will be hoping to take their place in the final at DHL Newlands next weekend. The other semifinal will see Paarl host Franschhoek United.

President of the WPRFU Mr Thelo Wakefield said that the President’s Cup is set to showcase the strength of club rugby in Western Province once more.

“Club rugby is the lifeblood of our game in Western Province, and it is always great to see the passion that the President’s Cup creates.

“There are 110 clubs in Western Province which span a wide range of different communities, and truly bring people together.

“We look forward to some quality rugby, and a celebration of club rugby at DHL Newlands on Heritage Day,” he said.
