DHL Western Province U19 picked up a convincing 54-8 victory against Leopards U19 at DHL Newlands on Saturday, to go to the top of the standings.

The hosts outscored the Potchefstroom side by eight tries to one, to secure their 10th victory from 11 games this season, which saw them move to the top of the log ahead of their final-round showdown with the second-placed Vodacom Blue Bulls U19 in Stellenbosch next week.

The visitors were first to strike with an early penalty, but DHL Western Province U19 hit back with the first try of the match as captain Ernst van Rhyn finished off a good team effort.

The home side were dealt a blow when wing Ryan Muller was shown a yellow card for a dangerous tackle, but they would be next to score as big No.8 Juarno Augustus dotted down twice in quick succession to put DHL Western Province firmly in the driving seat.

The bonus-point try came just before half-time, as right wing Nico Leonard collected a grubber to go over and give them a 26-3 advantage at the break.

The visitors struck first in the second half as flank Zwivhuya Mulaudzi forced his way over for their first try, but DHL Western Province responded with the hat-trick try from Augustus who barged his way over in the corner following a searing run from replacement Damian Willemse.

DHL Western Province U19 were down to 14 men again when Leonard was shown a yellow card for a cynical infringement, but that did not stop them from extending their lead as Van Rhyn went over for his second try soon afterwards.

Augustus thundered over for his fourth try before Tristan Leyds scored after the hooter to put the seal on a dominant performance for DHL Western Province U19 ahead of their final league fixture next week.
