The WP Rugby Football Union has unveiled a new initiative – the Western Province Rugby President’s Trust – to provide much-needed educational support to young rugby hopefuls in the province.
The WP Rugby President’s Trust, launched at DHL Newlands on Tuesday night (September 17, 2013), is the brainchild of Tobie Titus, the previous WPRFU President.
The President’s Trust aims to offer the chance for talented youngsters to realise their potential, honing both their sporting development and schooling; promoting healthy bodies and healthy minds.
The Trust is an investment into both the young talent in the region and into the economic growth of the province and its unique human capital. It invites gifted young players to apply for a bursary, to further their primary, secondary and tertiary education; since without education, no sportsman or woman can ever realise their potential.
“There is no doubt that sport, and particularly rugby, is a unifying force; one that can bring together the communities across the Western Cape,” said current WPRFU President Thelo Wakefield.

“However, there are so many talented young players that, while they have a natural aptitude for rugby, are unable to realise their full potential since they don’t have access to funds for schooling. The Trust aims to give an opportunity to these players, giving them a well-rounded approach to their career.”
* The Trust, which is registered as a Section 18A non-profit organisation, is funded through public donations and will now be on the search for like-minded partners and donors to increase the opportunities for bursaries. These bursaries and development opportunities are open to any young rugby player between the ages of 6 and 21, who feels that he or she shows demonstrable talent or potential in the game.
