The President’s Cup competition got off to a thrilling start, with some gripping action in the quarterfinals.

The President’s Cup is an annual Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) Club Rugby competition, which sees the top six teams in each of the top three Super Leagues, (Super League A, B and C) battle it out for the President’s Cup trophies.

At the end of the league phase of the club season, the top two teams in each Super League (A, B and C) automatically qualify for the President’s Cup semifinals, with their opponents decided in quarterfinals contested by the next four finishers in each of the club Super Leagues.

This all culminates on finals day which is held on Heritage Day – Saturday, September 24, at DHL Newlands. Entrance to this festival of WPRFU Club Rugby is R10 with tickets available at the stadium box office, or through your club, unless you are wearing your club jersey, in which case entrance is free.

In Super League A, champions False Bay and runners-up Maties will face Victorians and Hamiltons respectively in their semifinals on Saturday, September 17.

In the quarterfinals Victorians sprung a surprise by defeating Durbell, whilst defending President’s Cup champions Hamiltons edged Tygerberg 34-33 in a hotly contested encounter in Green Point.

In the Super League B competition, Hamlets confirmed their league form by beating St Georges 45-14 and will now face Pniel Villagers. Bellville defeated Villagers 24–7 and will take on Super League B champions Union-Milnerton in the other semifinal.

In the Super League C Competition, reigning President’s Cup champions Young Stars were beaten 50–26 by Franschhoek United who will now face Paarl in the semifinals. Langa beat Kylemore 26–23 in a hotly-contested clash, to book a semifinal against Super League C champions Rangers.

All semifinals will take place on Saturday, 17th September, with the finals being played at DHL Newlands on September 24th.

President of the WPRFU Mr Thelo Wakefield said that the President’s Cup is set to showcase the strength of club rugby in Western Province once more.

“Club rugby is the lifeblood of our game in Western Province, and it is always great to see the passion that the President’s Cup creates.

“There are 110 clubs in Western Province which span a wide range of different communities, and truly bring people together.

“We look forward to some quality rugby, and a celebration of club rugby at DHL Newlands on Heritage Day,” he said.
