Upsets in President’s Cup QFs

PUBLISHED: September 15, 2015

The quarterfinals of the 2015 President’s Cup – on September 12 – saw a number of clubs upset the applecart with remarkable performances to throw everyone’s predictions off.

In the Super League A competition, Hamiltons defeated Victorians 55-31 in a pulsating encounter. Hammies are hunting for silverware, having been pipped to the post by False Bay for a 2016 Cell C Community Cup spot, and now face their selfsame archrivals in the semifinals.

The story of the day though belonged to Durb-Bell who thumped a hapless UCT 48-10. The Community Cup Champions have had a disappointing season by their high standards but were on point against the Ikeys. They will meet Maties in the semifinals and based on this performance, will give the SLA champs a run for their money.

In the Super League C competition, Union-Milnerton and Hamlets served up a thriller at Theo Marais Park which was eventually won by the hosts 40-39. They will look to defend their title when they take on Brackenfell in the semis.

Hands & Heart sprang a surprise when they overcame the more fancied NNK 29-24 in a tight and tense affair. The Eikendal outfit will now face SLB champions Kuilsriver in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, in the Super League C competition, Elsies River United made it two wins from two against Scottsdene when they defeated their rivals 29-22. Gert Rademan’s men will be hoping to bring the unique Elsies ‘gees’ to DHL Newlands on September 24.

Young Stars defeated the dangerous Strand RFC side 22-10 to book a place in the semifinals. They will now face Goodwood in a David versus Goliath encounter.
