The DHL Western Province Under-19 team suffered a shock 27-28 defeat to the Leopards Under-19s at City Park on Saturday.
DHL WP led 10-7 at half-time, but went down to a converted try in virtually the final act of this ding-dong affair in Athlone.
WP’s tries were scored by No.8 Devon Nash, fullback Jason Worrall and right-wing Tiaan Mouton.
Mouton’s try, in the final ten minutes of play – a superb kick-and-chase effort, gave WP a 27-21 lead, but the visitors rode their luck to score the winning try by scrumhalf Chiswill September who scored a brace of tries on the day.
Leopards flyhalf Kerneels Swart held his nerve to convert September’s try and there was barely enough time for the restart.
The restart happened but the final whistle soon followed, resulting in the one-point loss for the WP Under-19s, who, last week, opened their 2013 account with a 16-16 draw in Bloemfontein.
