Maties retain Totalsports President’s Cup title

PUBLISHED: September 27, 2017

Maties beat Hamilton 36-29 in a pulsating Super League A Totalsports President’s Cup Final at City Park on Monday to retain their title.

The league champions from Stellenbosch have not lost a game this season and they continued that winning streak on Monday, although they were forced to work hard for it by a determined Hamilton side.

The Sea Point outfit launched a spirited second-half fight back and came within inches of levelling the scores at the death, but Maties held out well to retain the title.

In the Super League B Final it was Hamlets RFC and their legion of fans up against Franschhoek RFC in what was a rowdy affair with plenty of support from the crowd at City Park.

Both teams were well represented in the stands, but Hamlets had a clear edge on the pitch and sealed a 27-10 victory, to go along with the award their fans earned for the best support on the day.

The Super League C Final saw Scottsdene go up against Vineyards, with Vineyards claiming a 38-21 win to take the title.

Despite the chilly and overcast conditions there was a healthy crowd at City Park to enjoy what was a celebration of club rugby in Western Province.

The three bottom eight play-offs in each league saw Union-Milnerton beat Victorians, Kylemore beat Strand United and Young Peoples prevail against Rangers.
