Maties march into home final

The FNB Maties won the first three FNB Varsity Cup titles from 2008-2010, but have endured a five-year trophy drought since then, which they will be desperate to end in the final against FNB NWU-Pukke on Monday, April 11.

The Stellenbosch outfit have lost just one match to finish top of the log this season under coach Hawies Fourie, but they will be up against a dtermined FNB NWU-Pukke team who have lost the last two finals.

Their performance in the semifinal against FNB UP-Tuks was clinical, as they marched to a comprehensive victory.

FNB Maties started the match well and took a 19-0 lead into the first strategy break. Wingers, Edwill van der Merwe and Brandon Asher-Wood scored for the home side as they made earlier dominance into the FNB Tuks pack.

FNB UP-Tuks centre, Dries Swanepoel scored a nine-point try for FNB Tuks after an error by the FNB Maties, before Beyers de Villiers got one back for the men from Stellenbosch. FNB Maties led 29-11 at the break.

The second half was much tighter as FNB Maties continued to be more clinical. De Villiers went over after the back of a powerful maul again as FNB Maties started to create distance between them and FNB UP-Tuks.

Scrumhalf, Remu Malan made sure of the result when he went over six minutes before fulltime. Flyhalf Ernst Stapelberg was on song with the boot as he steered FNB Maties throughout the match as FNB Maties clinched the match 49-11.
