DHL Western Province coach Allister Coetzee was full of praise for his unbeaten team, after their hard-fought 23-18 Absa Currie Cup win over a ‘desperate’ Vodacom Blue Bulls side at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday evening.
Stunning second-half tries from wings Kobus van Wyk and Seabelo Senatla helped set up the victory, Province’s fourth in succession and second away from home in the 2014 Absa Currie Cup.
“We are very happy with the win, we were up against a desperate Vodacom Blue Bulls side and they showed the way they came out tonight and they really came at us,” Coetzee told the official DHL Western Province website.
“It is a massive win for us, to come out here at altitude to beat the Bulls with a relatively young side and it is the first time that they’ve lost at Loftus Versfeld this year (in either Super Rugby or the Currie Cup).”
The visitors led 3-0 at half-time but found themselves trailing the Bulls by 6-10 with just under half an hour remaining at Loftus Versfeld – before the excellent scores from Van Wyk and Senatla saw them finish Round Four as the only remaining unbeaten side in the 2014 Currie Cup.
“We played for about 30 minutes before we got the first penalty, it shows how tight it was, there was no quarter given and no quarter asked,” said Coetzee.
“If they played like this at the start of the competition I think they would have had more points on the log.
“It’s a massive win for us, there is no negotiating of our defence, but the transformation from defence to attack is the secret,” the DHL WP coach added.
“I think we’ve got the players to do that, Juan de Jongh, Cheslin Kolbe Seabelo Senatla, they switch on to that.”
Coetzee, meanwhile, also praised the DHL WP halfbacks for providing width and the communication out in the wide channels and concluded: “We are really happy with the win. We’re still making a few mistakes, but we’re a tight team who can pull through in matches of this nature.”
The only injury worry for Province after Saturday was try-scoring sensation and Absa Man of the Match Seabelo Senatla, who suffered an ankle injury in the 67th minute.
