There are records in sport and then there are impressive milestones. Durbanville-Bellville captain Marius White recently achieved an impressive milestone of his own.
Loose forward White has now captained Durb-Bell an incredible 100 times in Western Province Super League A action, having played over 175 league matches for a club he has served with distinction since 2004.
“I’m really privileged to have been able to play so many matches for such a great club,” a modest White told www.wprugby.com this week.
White, 31, will retire from rugby at the end of this season and he admitted: “It’s bitter-sweet for me. (But) it makes sense to retire now. I’ve been lucky enough to make some great mates and I’m grateful that my body has played along too.”
Durb-Bell’s inspirational captain has just four games left in his career, but he still has some unfinished business at the club.
He revealed: “Playing in the Club Champs and then the Community Cup were big highlights for me. It’s strange to think that I’ve got just four matches left, but I’d love to head into retirement knowing that Durb-Bell will be playing in next year’s Community Cup too.”
White’s legacy at Durb-Bell will not be forgotten in a hurry and club Vice-Chairman Robert Wallander paid the ultimate compliment to the loyal skipper, saying: “Ask anybody who has played against Marius – he’s a great leader and a good guy to boot.
“A lot of opposition clubs – players – and also referees sent him
messages before his 100th match as captain of Durb-Bell and it’s testament to what a good guy he is and how impressive this achievement is.”
Durbanville-Bellville will face Bellville (away) in Super League A action on Saturday, August 17 (kick-off 16h00).
