DHL Western Province are back in action tonight as they face Tafel Lager Griquas in a Carling Currie Cup clash in Kimberley.
There are six changes in total to the DHL WP starting line-up, five in the forward pack and just one in the backline. Kade Wolhuter starts at fullback, while in the pack prop Neethling Fouche, hooker Andre-Hugo Venter, lock Ben-Jason Dixon and loose forwards Marcel Theunissen and Nama Xaba all coming into the starting line-up. Junior Pokomela is also set to make his return from injury from the replacements bench.
Conditions in Kimberley are good, with the pitch looking green for a change, so we should be in for a great game.
0 – Kick-off in Kimberley and an early box kick from Godlen Masimla is charged into touch.
2 – Griquas return a high ball and is is lost forward by Luther Obi so DHL WP have an early scrum just outside the 22.
4 – DHL WP break out of the 22 and Zas puts in a good grubber. He chases and then loses it forward so Griquas have the scrum this time and win a penalty despite being under pressure.
6 – DHL WP go offside, so Griquas flyhalf Zander du Plessis opens the scoring with a penalty.
8 – Ali Vermaak earns a scrum penalty so Tim Swiel kicks into the corner as they look for a try.
10 – Scrum penalty earned by Ali Vermaak. They kick to the corner and maul before it goes wide. Sergeal Petersen brought down just short, but Leolin Zas is there to go over and give DHL WP a 7-3 lead.
12 – Another penalty from Zander du Plessis brings the home side within one point.
14 – Strong scrum and Swiel puts a good kick into touch in the 22.
16 – DHL WP keep the pressure on in the opposition 22 and kick out into the corner as they press for a second try.
18 – Ball knocked on by Masimla, so Griquas have the scrum.
21 – Nama Xaba gets his hands on the ball at the breakdown, but the call goes against him this time, so Du Plessis kicks his third penalty to give Tafel Lager Griquas a 9-7 lead.
23 – Stef Ungerer breaks away and Ben-Jason Dixon gets there but plays him off the ball so the lock is shown a yellow card. Du Plessis kicks another penalty to make it 12-7.
27 – Good aul defence from DHL WP earns the scrum. Masimla goes blindside to Petersen and they win some territory.
30 – DHL WP keeping the ball well while a man down, but the slippery ball knocked on at crucial points.
33 – Attacking scrum but Petersen is called for offside, so Griquas can clear it again. DHL WP back to 15 now as Dixon returns.
36 – Good defence from DHL WP, getting out of their 22 effectively. More good pressure on defence but it is knocked on in the tackle so Griquas have a scrum in their own half.
38 – Huge scrum from the DHL WP pack earns a penalty and Tim Swiel steps up to kick the points which cuts the deficit to 12-10.
40 – Half-time in Kimberley where DHL WP have scored the only try so far and go into the break trailing by just two points. Anyone’s game in the second half, challenge will be to turn the territory and possession into points.
41 – Second half underway as DHL WP look to turn their territory and possession into points to take the lead back.
44 – Griquas kicking and DHL WP running it back with advantage. Griquas blown up at the breakdown so Swiel hs a shot at goal but it goes wide.
47 – Drop-out goes out on the full, so DHL WP have an attacking scrum.
49 – DHL WP drive forward and make it all the way to the tryline, but it is lost forward by Mazibuko just short of the line.
51 – Griquas win the scrum penalty on their line and clear it.
53 – DHL WP playing all the rugby in opposition territory at the start of the second half and eventually the points come from the boot of Tim Swiel to put them back in front.
57 – Griquas win a few penalties which eventually end in a maul try to give them the lead back.
60 – Strong scrum from DHL WP in their 22 earns a penalty and they can attack as they look to take the lead back.
63 – Griquas win it at the breakdown, but then kick out on the full.
65 – DHL WP on the charge again and the grubber through in the 22 just goes too long as Griquas hang on for dear life under pressure.
68 – Scrum penalty for Griquas so they kick into the corner. High tackle so they kick to the corner again.
70 – Another maul try for Griquas makes it 22-13.
73 – DHL WP with another attacking opportunity, but another knock-on gives Griquas the ball back.
78 – Another scrum penalty for Griquas and Du Plessis has a shot at goal which goes wide.
79 – DHL WP come from their own 22 as they look to have the final say. Yellow card for Griquas prop Dube for a high tackle. It goes wide and Leolin Zas gets over for his second try.
80 – Full-time in Kimberley where DHL WP fought hard until the end, but it was the home side that held on for a tense 22-20 Carling Currie Cup victory. A try in each half from Leolin Zas, but they ran out of time at the end.
