An improved Durbanville-Bellville side is looking forward to the play-off phase of the Cell C Community Cup, which takes place in George over the Easter Weekend.
Durb-Bell booked their place in the knock-out stages of this competition with a whopping 96-0 win over Welkom Rovers at the weekend.
With the exciting SK Walmers team having been knocked out by Despatch last weekend, Durbanville-Bellville are Western Province’s last remaining title hope in this competition.
“It was a 22-man effort. The team’s discipline was exemplary,” said a pleased Durb-Bell assistant coach Bobby Joubert.
“We scored 14 tries and converted 13 of those – through our excellent place-kickers Raynor Becker and Tiaan Radyn. Morne Meningke scored three tries, whilst Renier Marais, JP Prinsloo and Alconroy Botha were outstanding for us.”
It was a second emphatic win for the powerful Durbanville-Bellville outfit who began the Community Cup with a tough 26-35 loss to Pretoria Police.
“We are very excited and hopeful,” added Joubert about their trip to George. “I think our team has improved a great deal since the first match against Police.”
However, Joubert admitted that Durb-Bell faced a tough draw in George, with National Club champions, College Rovers, waiting for them in the quarterfinals.
“If we get past College Rovers, then Pretoria Police could be next for us in the semifinals. It certainly doesn’t get much easier!”
A 28-man Durbanville-Bellville squad will depart for George on Wednesday, March 27.
Durb-Bell face Rovers in the quarterfinals at Outeniqua Park at 16h00 on Thursday, March 28. Win or lose, the play-offs will continue in George on Saturday, March 30 and Monday, April 1.
