The Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) Mini Rugby Day will be held on Saturday, May 13 at Bellville Technical High School.

Billed as one of the biggest events at school level in Western Province Rugby, the Union expects to host 3800 young players that will make up 280 teams coming from 73 different schools.

Matches will start at 08h00 and finish at 14h00 with food available from stalls. The entry fee is R10 per adult and R10 per vehicle, with children under 12 allowed in without charge.

DHL Stormers stars Scarra Ntubeni, Steph de Wit, Rynhardt Elstadt, Leolin Zas, Huw Jones, Caylib Oosthuizen and Sikhumbuzo Notshe will be there at 10h00 for signature and photo opportunities with Mini Rugby players and fans.

A moment of silence will take place in remembrance of the late Lionel Gericke – CEO of sponsor Genuine Connection – who sadly passed away on 7 April.

President of the Western Province Rugby Football Union, Mr Thelo Wakefield, said that the Mini Rugby Day is an important event on the Union’s calendar and embodies the rallying call ‘We Stand together’.

“This event is part of the WPRFU’s effort to make the game of rugby accessible to all and judging by the enthusiasm that surrounds the WPRFU Mini Rugby Day, it is clear that schools rugby as a feeder to the club rugby structures within Western Province has a bright future.

“It is especially heartening to see our DHL Stormers players out there interacting with the children who look up to them, showing what we mean by ‘We Stand Together’,” he said.

Western Province Rugby Group CEO Paul Zacks said that he is looking forward to seeing some future talent on display this weekend.

“This event has not only grown in leaps and bounds over the last few years, but it has also signalled the start of many successful careers of rugby players that have gone on to wear the famous blue and white hoops of DHL Western Province teams at DHL Newlands

“If the past successes of this event are anything to go by, the WPRFU Mini Rugby Day on Saturday will once again be enjoyed by players and parents alike,” he said.

This event would not be possible without the support of valued sponsors Spur Steak Ranches, Genuine Connection and Peninsula Beverages who do so much for the WP Schools Rugby Department.
