Eight-try DHL WP outplay EP Kings

PUBLISHED: March 22, 2014

DHL Western Province bounced back to form in the 2014 Vodacom Cup tournament with a clinical 56-22, eight tries to three victory over the EP Kings XV at City Park on Saturday.

DHL Western Province  No.8 Rayn Smid scored a hat-trick of tries for his team in this one-sided South Section match, as the hosts ran in eight tries with the visitors managing just three in return.

The win was a welcome return to form for DHL WP who went down to the Sharks XV in Durban last week and they were soon into their stride with Smid dotting down as early as the seventh minute.

The EP Kings XV struck back just four minutes later when right wing Michael Killian strode over for a converted try.

However, Smid was proving to be something of a handful for the visitors and he grabbed his second try in the 15th minute.

DHL WP flyhalf Gary van Aswegan and his opposite number Ntabeni Dukisa then traded penalties before the hosts took control of the contest with a try from right-wing JP Lewis while Smid wrapped up his hat-trick with a try in the 35th minute as WP led 27-10 at half-time.

EP began the second half well as replacement wing Selvyn Davids scored a try just one minute after the restart.

But the score seemed to invigorate the home team who went on a scoring blitz as they added tries from flanks Sikhumbuszo Notshe and Rohan Kitshoff, replacement Kyle Lombard and left-wing Devon Williams, whilst lock Kuhle Sonkosi scored a consolation try for the visitors.

DHL WP, the 2012 champions, have now won two out of three games in 2014, having beaten the Boland Cavaliers by 16-8 in Week One and losing 7-25 to the Sharks XV in Durban last weekend.

Province will take on Border in East London next Friday (kick-off 19h00) in their fourth fixture of the 2014 Vodacom Cup season.
