DHL WP Women fall short in EL

PUBLISHED: September 21, 2014

Border on Friday night succeeded in their mission to secure back-to-back home finals in the SARU Women’s Interprovincial Series as they delivered a dominant performance to outclass rivals DHL Western Province 22-7 in East London.

Border, the defending champions, will face the Blue Bulls in the final next Saturday after the Pretoria side defeated Eastern Province 8-5 at the Central Fields in Uitenhage to advance to the final.

Border started their clash against the DHL Western Province Women at the BCM Stadium strongly and controlled proceedings in the first half, which guided them to a 17-0 half-time lead.

They managed to build on this in the second half as they increased their try tally for the clash to four, while the Cape side scored their first and only try of the match to get onto the scoreboard. Border’s four-try romp allowed them to continue their fine attacking form in the competition, which saw them earn bonus points for tries in all five of their round-robin matches.

Meanwhile, the clash in Uitenhage was epic as the teams gave everything on attack and defence to emerge victorious. The battle was so close neither team was able to score points in the first half.

Both teams, however, broke through for a try in the second half, but a penalty by the visitors to add to their five-pointer earned them the narrow 8-5 victory.
