DHL Western Province are looking to make it back-to-back Carling Currie Cup wins at Cape Town Stadium as they take on the Tafel Lager Griquas from Kimberley today.
Conditions are perfect in Cape Town today for some rugby, clear skies and cool conditions as both teams warm up.
0 – Kick-off at Cape Town Stadium and DHL WP exit well from the 22 and drive Griquas back to halfway.
3 – Knock-on from Godlen Masimla so Griquas have the first scrum. They manage to get it away and it is marked in the 22 by Petersen.
5 – Griquas give away a breakdown penalty, so Swiel sets up a line-out in the 22, good attacking opportunity for DHL WP.
7 – DHL WP maul all the way from the 22 and it is hooker JJ Kotze who crashes over for the opening try to put them 7-0 up.
10 – Griquas hit back with a try of their own as Ashlon Davids takes a high ball to score and level the scores at 7-7.
13 – Another breakdown penalty so Swiel kicks it out in the corner again, but Griquas steal the line-out and clear it.
17 – Another series of mauls see Griquas give away a few penalties and eventually Kotze is over for his second try to give DHL WP a 12-7 lead.
21 – Griquas with the ball outside the 22 and Masimla goes for an intercept but knocks it on. Whitehead has a shot at goal but pushes it wide.
23 – DHL WP go offside this time so Whitehead has another shot and this time it is over to reduce the home team’s lead to 12-10.
26 – Griquas win another penalty and will have a line-out on halfway to launch another attack.
28 – Scrum penalty this time for Griquas, so they kick it into the corner and maul.
30 – Griquas go to the blindside and right wing Daniel Kasende goes through to score and give them a 17-12 lead.
32 – Cynical breakdown infringement from replacement tighthead prop Lee-Marvin Mazibuko and he is shown a yellow card.
35 – Sloppy line-out ball is picked up by Swiel and he kicks ahead for Van der Merwe to chase. DHL WP awarded a series of penalties in the 22 so Swiel kicks the points to reduce Griquas lead to 17-15.
38 – DHL WP break out again and Van der Merwe kicks ahead but it rolls into touch in the 22. Griquas clear it into touch on the 10 metre.
40 – DHL WP strike on the stroke of half-time with a deft grubber from Swiel kicked ahead and it is Sergeal Petersen who dives on it to score and give them a 22-17 lead at the break.
41 – Second half underway and DHL WP have an early scrum on the 22 with a great opportunity to stretch their lead.
43 – DHL WP run a few phases on the 22 before they get a penalty and Swiel kicks it over to take the lead out to 25-17.
46 – Griquas get a penalty as DHL WP stray offside and Whitehead kicks it over to cut the home team’s lead to 25-20.
48 – Good pressure from the restart from DHL WP and they win a line-out in the 22. Line-out is overthrown so Griquas can clear.
51 – High ball goes up and it is ruled a knock-on so Griquas have a scrum near halfway. Whitehead bounces a kick out in the 22, so DHL WP are on the back foot.
54 – Quick throw-in goes wide and Senatla kicks to find space. Good chase from Pretorius and now Griquas are back in their 22.
57 – Van der Merwe looks to have scored in the corner, but the TMO calls it back for a knock-on so Griquas have a scrum in their 22.
59 – Referee blows another scrum penalty, but DHL WP win it back at the line-out. Evan Roos breaks free and takes it into the 22, but loses it forward in contact just in front of the tryline.
61 – Another scrum penalty for Griquas, so they can clear it again.
66 – Griquas kicking at every opportunity. DHL WP doing their best to run it back. They win a penalty and Swiel has another shot at goal and it is over to make it 28-20.
70 – DHL WP blown up at the breakdown this time and Whitehead kicks the penalty to make it 28-23.
72 – Griquas put a grubber into touch in the 22, so DHL WP are defending their line again.
75 – Griquas are over the tryline, but the TMO rules that the pass was forward, so DHL WP have a scrum near the 22.
77 – Ball is cleared and chased well, but a breakdown penalty means that Griquas will have another chance to win it.
80 – A try after the hooter at Cape Town Stadium has seen the Tafel Lager Griquas snatch a dramatic 30-28 win against DHL WP.
