DHL WP Under-19s lose to Bulls

PUBLISHED: July 27, 2013

The DHL Western Province Under-19s suffered a 10-34 defeat at the hands of the Blue Bulls in their Provincial Under-19 clash at City Park on Saturday afternoon.

The DHL WP U19s trailed by 7-13 at half-time in front of a lively crowd at City Park, the venue having celebrated its upgrade and new facilities with a pre-match function.

Most of the match was played in a steady downpour, but the WP pack stood up to their bigger opponents as the teams went into half-time at one try each – just two penalties separating the score.

The Bulls, however, clicked into gear in the second half, with fullback Jesse Kriel adding a second try to his first-half effort – both good individual scores – with WP managing a penalty goal through flyhalf Chris Smith.

To their credit, the WP youngsters did not give up for one second – even after conceding a fourth try in the 21st minute of the second half. The last 14 minutes of the game saw the WP side attack strongly, but they were unable to breach the Bulls defence.

Province’s try was scored by No.8 Steven Meiring (pictured, above), with Smith also adding the conversion.

WP Under-19 have a bye next weekend, before playing host to Border at DHL Newlands on Saturday, August 10.
