Coach John Dobson’s DHL WP Under-21 side booked a play-off berth with a fine 39-33 bonus point win against the Cheetahs at Florida Park this afternoon.
Earlier in the day, the DHL WP U19 side went top of the log with a 31-16 bonus point win also against the Cheetahs and their ‘seniors’ made it a double at the home of Tygerberg RFC.
Province secured their bonus point in the first half, running in four unanswered tries to lead 32-0 at the break.
Free State then turned the tables running in four tries of their own in a spirited fight back, before Province crossed again to secure the win.
Centre Cobus van Wyk opened the scoring for the DHL WP U21s in the second minute, with winger Dean Hammond and loose forwards Josh Katzen and Rayn Smid all crossing in the first half. Katzen’s second try, in the 66th minute, put the result beyond doubt despite Free State’s brave fightback.
The DHL WP U21s have just one game left against Border in East London on Friday night before the play-offs.
